What kinds of aftermarket wheels are available?

There are many different aspects of the wheel to consider when answering this question. The three main things to take into account are the materials used to make them, the manufacturing process and, finally, the finish. These are the important things that make up what your wheels actually are, before diving into things like color, design and, of course, size. Let’s first cover the different types of materials.

The three most common materials utilized to make automobile wheels include steel, alloy and carbon fiber. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, for example steel wheels are inexpensive and durable but heavy and usually not very aesthetically pleasing, while alloy wheels are lightweight but harder to repair.

Next up is how the wheels are manufactured. Steel wheels are most often pressed from sheet metal before being welded into the finished product, which is likely why they’re not usually very appealing. For alloy wheels you’re looking at either being forged or cast, while carbon fiber wheels are forged or molded. Forged wheels are often lighter and stronger but more expensive than their counterparts in either case.

Finally, that brings us to wheel finishes, of which there are again three common options. Chrome plating is popular because of how shiny and classic they look, but they are very susceptible to pitting. Powder coating is another popular choice because of the freedom it gives you over color choice, but they often need to be touched up if you don’t take good care of them. Lastly, clear coating gives you the same freedom of colors but leaves them with a look of polished metal, which is always stunning to look at.

What kinds of aftermarket tires are available?

There are many different kinds of tires to choose from, probably far more than you might even realize. We won’t dive into detailed explanations of each one as most of them are relatively self explanatory, but feel free to reach out with any questions. The following is a list that includes many of the most popular options from which to choose, in no particular order:

  • All-Season
  • Competition
  • Passenger
  • Performance
  • Summer
  • Touring
  • All-Terrain
  • Mud-Terrain
  • Sport Truck
  • Winter

What sizes are available for custom wheels and tires?

This is a fairly complex question as it largely depends on what your vehicle is capable of accommodating. Technically speaking, as long as you’re willing to make potentially extensive modifications to other aspects of your vehicle, any vehicle can be customized with any size wheel and tire. That doesn’t mean every size is going to be practical for every type of vehicle.

The most common wheel sizes are 15-22 inches. When we start getting into off-road and other more extreme builds, you can certainly go bigger. A lot of pickup trucks and off-road SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler might push up to larger sizes like 23-26” and 28”, 30” and 32” are technically possible as well though much rarer.

Tires offer more freedom, as you don’t have to have the same size as your wheels; although, having much larger tires than wheels will still require additional modifications to your vehicle. For example, some of our basic packages include a lift kit and 17” wheels wrapped in 35” tires. For more examples or if you have any questions about the custom wheels and tires you’d like to get in your vehicle here in the Tulsa area, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us right here at the Glover Customs sales desk. We look forward to hearing from you!
